Discussion Series Explores “Reader’s Choice”

Discussion Series Explores “Reader’s Choice”

Parsons Public Library announces a three-part book discussion series scheduled for the fall on the theme “Reader’s Choice.”

When Kansas readers were asked at the 2007 Book Festival in Wichita to declare their favorite book, the choices were diverse, but the top vote-getters shared some terrain familiar to Kansans.  One story is steeped in family mythology, one in a father’s philosophy, and one in shared familial knowledge that makes survival possible.  The vastness of space and the closeness of communities and families in these novels are familiar elements, but ultimately, each book underscores the resiliency of the human spirit, a theme that resonates with Kansans.

The first discussion, scheduled for Monday, September 10, at 6:30 pm, features Holes, by Louis Sachar.  This novel starts with Stanley Yelnats being sent to Camp Green Lake, a juvenile detention center; he discovers that the lake is a vast dry bed where the inmates dig holes each day in the searing sun. The mystery of the Warden’s obsession with digging is gradually revealed as Louis Sachar weaves the story of Stanley’s incarceration with family myths of his “no-good-dirty-rotten-pig-stealing-great-great-grandfather,” whose long ago actions set in motion a cosmic plan that determines Stanley’s fate.

The discussion leader will be Dennis Etzel, Jr. Dennis is an instructor of English at Washburn University. He received his M.F.A. in Creative Writing from the University of Kansas. Dennis joined the TALK program in 2012.

Copies of the book are available now for check-out.

To supplement the book discussion, the library will show the movie Holes on Thursday, September 13 at 2:00 pm.

The series continues with discussions on To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee (October 15), and Life of Pi, by Yann Martel (November 5).  All book discussions begin at 6:30 pm in the multipurpose room of the library.

The series is sponsored by Humanities Kansas (HK), a nonprofit cultural organization, as part of its Talk About Literature in Kansas (TALK) program.  HK is furnishing the books and discussion leaders for the Parsons TALK series.  For more information about HK, visit www.humanitieskansas.org.
